playdate

I think I cut out this pattern just before Heather and I left for her Vermont sewing workshop in July. It's finally finished, after snatching a little sewing time here and there when I passed "the workroom," as we facetiously call our converted closet.

This is an Oliver + S Playdate Dress, shortened and with the pockets removed to be a tunic for Tsia. I made it from chambray (what's not to love about chambray?), and cut the ruffles on the bias so they would fray a bit and didn't need to be finished on the edges. She loves it!

Can anyone tell me where to purchase girl's bobby socks? We only seem to find sporty socks in the shops around us, and we really need something that looks better with her school shoes.

Also, I was thinking about why I haven't been blogging much. I think it's mostly because I'm tired of lugging the giant camera everywhere. But Tsia's little digital camera (it's a regular digital camera, but we purchased it mostly for her) just isn't doing it for me. After two shots (that photo at the top is one of the shots) I decided I'd better start carrying the big camera, after all. I'll work on it.

  1. I like the socks at Gymboree with the tiny bows at the back. They also have cute "fold-over" ones. Usually they have them 3/$10 but this time of year, they often are 5/$10.

Love the tunic, such a cute idea!

  2. I love the tunic! My daughter is in a no-dress phase that pains me, but this tunic would satisfy both of us. For all types of socks, try http://www.tootsiesstriderite.com/site/547049/page/45029

  3. Gymboree socks are nice, but my favorite for quality are Hanna Andersson's. Meg will 2nd this for me, she's the one that convinced me of their quality and WOW! I'm sold. The socks are just fold-over, not eyelet lace. If you're wanting more of ruffly type, I just get them at Target, but I just noticed Hanna carries them, too.

Oh that tunic is so sweet! I really love the ruffle detail. And I agree, what's not to love about Chambrey?!

  5. Tee-hee! I never have time to read comments, but I HAD to chime in on Hanna socks, and April beat me to it! Their "loose tights" also are amazing and the only tights I bother with anymore.

The playdate dress is one O+S pattern that I haven't made yet, but now I feel compelled to hunt down some chambray, you enabler you.

  6. Oh, we did just buy some white fold-over socks with scalloped edges from Baby Gap, 5/$10. Looks super cute with her brown MJs. Meanwhile, the boy gets gray/white crew socks by the bagful from Costco.

  7. I don't know what size Tsia is, but these Old Navy foldover socks go up to 4T/5T. They're kind of cheap - in quality and in price - so you kind of get what you pay for ($1 or $1.50 a pair). That said, we've been using them with our 15-mo old since she was 6-mo and are satisfied. (But she only started walking recently - no idea how they will wear with more abuse.)

Love your sewing patterns but haven't gotten up the nerve to take the plunge, I am a novice (and crummy) sewer.

  8. How adorable! What a great idea to make it into a tunic!

  9. I love the same Gymboree socks that Jenny recommended. Especially those cute ones with the bows on the back.

Old Navy has great cotton bobby socks as well.

Darn you, Liesl. Now I'm going to have to go buy some chambray. My list of fabric "needs" is growing every time I read your blog.

    RE: cameras

I love my heavy CANON (digital) but wohee it is weighty. Look into the NIKON coolpix series of cameras....they are so light, so simle to use & produce very decent photos.

Just love, love your creative sewing patterns & ideas,
and soon, I'll be a first-time grandmum to a baby boy!

  12. Target has the socks and I do like Old Navy's socks if your looking for the standard fold over plain bobby socks. Good Luck finding what you want.

Now on to that Playdate Tunic... I am afraid to try that one out. It seems very intimidating for a moderate beginner. I have been dying to try some of your patterns, but I have a phobia of shipping (which the deeper I get into my sewing sickness the less I seem to mind shipping since it seems to be the only way to get the really really good stuff:) I might just have to take the plunge and do it. My daughter hates when the elastic is up on her neck so I think she would love this...and I would never of thought to shorten it up for a top. Thanks
