Pay-toe

Wouldn't you know it but this morning was the first chance to sleep late that I've had in more than a year and here I am, up earlier than usual. Todd and Dr. S (as we've taken to calling her) have gone to Paris (or, as she says, "Pay-toe") for the week, and I'm home working on the final details of preparing for Quilt Market. (Details like actually making the samples for the booth and making the curtains themselves for the booth walls; maybe I shouldn't be calling them details, come to think of it.)

Their upcoming trip gave me a good excuse to lay aside all the crucial deadlines and make S a small Paris-themed backpack for the occasion.

Of course she wasn't willing to model it for me. She was too busy reassuring me, "I be back soon, Mommy," when I told her I would miss her.

We packed it with all the necessities: a sketchbook, stickers, pencils and crayons, her new silverware/chopstick mess kit, and a few other key items for the trip.

And I got a big scolding from the MTA employees for snapping this shot as they entered the subway en route to the airport. I know photos aren't allowed, but it was worth it.

  1. tsia is so adorable and i don't say that about all children. great backpack and although i know you will miss her terribly maybe try to sneak in a movie and a girl night...some of those things you don't get to do as much once you have children.

  2. The new backpack is adorable -- not to mention that daughter of yours! And pictures aren't allowed on the subway??? Guess us tourists don't know that sort of stuff -- we're always taking pictures of all the interesting tiles!

Yeah, how come no pictures?? Guess I have always been the tourist as well! CUTE photo!!!

Good luck getting things done for the quilt show!

  4. Unfortunately photos aren't officially allowed due to terrorist concerns. It's the official policy of the MTA, but you're right: tourists snap photos all the time. Frankly, if no one stops you I wouldn't be concerned about it. And who can help themselves, with all those amazing mosaics in the stations?

  6. Nancy, I will absolutely be sneaking in the Helvetica documentary one of these days! I'm dying to see it. And I already had a girls' night out with an old friend who I haven't seen in ages. Wasted no time in scheduling that! Cheers.

  8. It's too bad that MTA employees are poorly informed, and have scared New Yorkers away from fully enjoying the imagery of their own city. Unless you are using lights and/or a tripod, you are absolutely allowed to photograph in the subway. I wouldn't ever recommend arguing with anyone in a uniform, but you can always direct them to the MTA's own website, Section 1059.9c of the Rules of Conduct.

  9. Sorry, that's Section 1050.9c. Again, not that I'd be wagging it in the face of anyone in a maroon vest.

  11. Oh, what a wonderful adventure for such a sweet, adorable little girl! My goodness, what a trip, and what a great backpack you conjured up for her.
Has she been introduced to Madeline (Ludwig Bemelmans)? That's all I could think about off and on today, how she would love Madeline stories after going to Pay-toe.

Oh good lord, How cute - now I have to know where to get that map fabric! Will you get to stay for the Houston Quilt Show as well as the market? I've been trying to find someone who can get me into the market, but I am planning on making the show.

  15. The MTA did briefly propose a subway photo ban in 2004, but it was dropped in 2005: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9802E4DD1239F930A15756C0A9639C8B63

  16. I love that photo! It was well worth a scolding. I'm heading off to Paris for the first time next year - just bought my tickets. I'd love to make myself something with the Paris fabric you used. Can you direct me to it? Thanks!

Ah, I just had a flashback to when I was in grade 4 or 5 and I had a Egyptian sarcophagus pencil tin like that from the British Museum. Except all the kids in my class were tasteless, and made fun of me because inside was the goddess Nut, who was, of course, naked. Bah!

  18. What a darling little girl. Was she sucking her thumb in the last photo? Both my children were attached to their little fingers, too. And, boy - that teddy bear is so-stinking-cute! What an icon he has become for your blog.

Enjoyed the paris fabric, but mostly enjoyed the darlingness of 'S' for when she was little.
